Streaming services are all the rage. From Spotify to Apple Music to Amazon Prime Music, there are plenty of ways to enjoy music without storing it locally. But if you’re one of those who still prefer to keep your music local, we’ve good news: BlackPlayer is here to help.

If you’re looking for an app that lets you play your music, we recommend BlackPlayer. Its unique feature is the Discover function, which randomly plays songs from your library for 10 seconds before deciding what to play next. Another cool feature is the ability to customize the look of buttons, fonts, and themes. Finally, there’s a notification bar, so you don’t miss any important events.

The app launched earlier this week and offered a free version with limited features. You can pay $2.99 monthly for access to premium features like unlimited skips, offline playback, and more. And while the free version doesn’t offer much beyond basic controls, it does come with some unique features.

For instance, it lets you shuffle through short previews of songs in your library and choose what to play next. If you want, you can even add tags to each song preview. This way, you’ll never forget what you wanted to listen to again.

There’s also a Discover mode that constantly scans your library and plays ten seconds of random songs. It’s similar to Shazam’s “Shuffle,” but with a little less noise. Plus, you can use the app’s built-in tag editor to ensure everything gets tagged properly.

You can see a complete list of features in our video review above, but the bottom line is that BlackPlayer is a solid alternative to traditional streaming apps.

You can either listen to what the site thinks you like or choose one of its curated channels or playlists. There are also playlists, such as Yacht Rock, tailored to specific preferences and moods. If you are not ready to commit to LiveXLive, you can try the free version first.

LiveXLive is introducing a new music streaming service that lets people skip songs they don’t want to hear. But unlike Spotify or Apple Music, where listeners are forced to endure endless ads, Pandora says it won’t interrupt its customers unless they specifically ask for it.

The new offering, LiveXLive, is designed to provide personalized recommendations based on a person’s listening history. Instead of being bombarded with advertisements, people will see suggestions for artists and songs they might enjoy, according to the company. They can either choose to listen to those tracks immediately or save them for later.

In addition to letting people skip songs, LiveXLive offers curated stations and playlists — including ones focused on specific genres, such as yacht rock, or live performances, such as concerts streamed by artists. People can also create custom stations and playlists.

If you aren’t ready to subscribe to Live X Live, you can still give it a test run. The service doesn’t require a subscription, although it offers free limited features. For example, while it won’t let you skip songs, it will allow you to stream up to 10 hours of music per month without paying anything extra.

Spotify

Spotify
Spotify App

Spotify is a digital music service based out of Sweden. Its popularity grew rapidly throughout 2016, thanks to its easy-to-use interface and the fact that it offered unlimited listening for $10 per month. Nowadays, you can listen to millions of songs without paying anything.

The service has been around since 2008, but it didn’t take off until 2011, when Apple launched its iTunes Match feature, allowing people to upload their entire library of music to iCloud and stream it from anywhere. This caused Spotify’s growth to skyrocket. In 2012, there were about 40 million active monthly users; today, that number stands at 300 million.

In 2013, Spotify began offering ad-supported versions of its app for iOS devices. At the time, the ads weren’t too intrusive, but things changed in early 2017 when Spotify introduced “freemium,” where it charged less money for fewer features. The freemium model allows users to access some of Spotify’s most popular features like offline playback and scrobbling but doesn’t allow full use of the service.

Today, Spotify continues to grow, even though it faces competition from rival apps like Tidal and Apple Music. In addition, Spotify has had trouble keeping up with the likes of Amazon Prime Music Unlimited and Pandora Premium. Spotify recently announced that it plans to launch a paid subscription tier sometime next year.

Free, legal music streaming has become an essential part of Spotify, thanks to its extensive music library. You can browse playlists, find your favorite albums, or discover a curated collection of songs. Thanks to close relationships with artists, it’s often possible for new music to hit record stores the same day. Maybe it’s no longer available? There’s also a free trial of Spotify.

Per Month, Starts at $9.99 on Spotify

PHOTOGRAPHY

Adobe Lightroom Mobile

Adobe Lightroom
Adobe Lightroom App

Adobe Lightroom Mobile lets you edit photos taken with your smartphone with the same tools used to edit photos taken with a DSLR camera. The software offers several helpful editing options, including RAW camera profiles, noise reduction, profile-based lens correction, and advanced color and light adjustments. You can sync these edits with your desktop version of Lightroom, so they’re available when you open an image.

Adobe Lightroom Mobile also syncs all the edits across both apps. This makes it easier to work on photos on multiple platforms, like iPad and iPhone, without exporting files. You can also use the same library across different devices, making it easy to switch back and forth between editing sessions.

The app allows you to edit RAW images directly in the Photos app. It works well with most cameras, including Canon, Nikon, Sony, Olympus, Fujifilm, Leica, Samsung, and Panasonic. However, it doesn’t support third-party lenses.

Regarding quality, Lightroom Mobile performs well, especially compared to some of the competition. Its interface is simple and intuitive, allowing you to quickly adjust settings such as exposure, white balance, contrast, sharpness, and saturation.

You can also apply filters, effects, vignettes, and crop images. In addition, you can add text captions, rotate, flip, straighten, and resize images.

Overall, Lightroom Mobile is a great way to edit photos. If you’re looking for a robust alternative to Apple’s built-in Camera app, you’ll want to check out Lightroom Mobile.

MSRP $9.99 $19.99 Per Month at Adobe Lightroom Mobile

Flickr

Flickr
Flickr App

Remember Flickr? If you’re like most people, you probably don’t. But anyone who uses the internet knows what it once stood for. In 2006, Yahoo bought the site and turned it into one of the biggest social networks. What happened next? Well, it crashed and burned. In 2013, Yahoo sold Flickr to SmugMug, a San Francisco-based startup. And now, the company is finally bringing Flickr back four years later.

The good news? You’ll still find plenty of reasons to use Flickr. The service offers a great way to store and manage your digital photographs, loaded with features that make the experience fun. Whether you want to upload images, edit them, or just browse around, Flickr makes it easy. Just keep reading to see why it’s worth checking out again.

A Great Photo Experience

Like many online services, Flickr gives you access to many different ways to view your pictures. Each type has its own set of features. For example, Explore lets you sort your photos by date, popularity, location, size, color, and even tags. Collections let you organize your shots into themed groups and albums. Finally, Moments lets you easily browse through your best moments.

With an intuitive interface and excellent photo and video editing tools, Flickr is more valuable than ever. Moreover, the app lets you connect with the service’s vibrant community of photographers. You can automatically back up your phone’s photos. Unlimited online photo storage is available for $50 per year, and users can upload up to 1,000 photos for free.

Tons of filters and effects let you tweak your photos. While some are pretty basic — such as black and white — others offer many options. For example, you can use a vignette to blur the edges of your image, add a vintage look, or turn your picture into a collage. You can crop and rotate your photos, adjust exposure, contrast, saturation, sharpness, noise reduction, and change colors.

You can also take advantage of the built-in editor to enhance your images. By default, the tool lets you trim off unwanted parts of your shot, straighten crooked photos, and add borders to your images. However, you can customize the settings to make things work exactly how you want them to.

As mentioned earlier, Flickr includes automatic backup. This feature saves every single photo you’ve uploaded throughout your account. So if anything happens to your device, you won’t lose a thing.

Google Photos

Google Photos
Google Photos App

The latest version of Google Photos combines the best parts of Google Search, Gmail, Maps, YouTube, Android, Chrome, and everything else Google does. This isn’t just another mobile app — it’s designed to work across devices, including phones, tablets, TVs, speakers, and smartwatches. And it’s free.

Photos are organized into collections called Moments, Collections, Events, Places, People, and Albums. These groups help you find what you want quickly, whether you’re looking for a birthday party or a vacation spot. If you’re searching for something specific, like “photos of my cat,” you’ll see suggestions based on location, date, and people.

You can use voice commands to find things within moments, such as telling Google to show pictures taken during the summer. Or you can ask questions about your photos, such as “show me pictures of the beach.” You can also tell Google to add text captions to your images, change colors, or generate collages. For example, you could say, “make a collage of all my family members’ birthdays.”

If you’ve got a lot of photos, Google Photos offers unlimited online backup. Just sign up for a free account, link your device(s), and select how much space you’d like to store. Once you’ve uploaded your collection, you can access it via your web browser or download it to your computer. You can also save copies to your smartphone and tablet, too.

Google Photos also includes a few handy features for printing photos. You can scan a physical print into your library or choose from one of several templates. You can also edit the colors, crop, rotate, and add a caption. Then you can either email the photo to someone, post it on social media, or send it directly to Google Cloud Print.

Fax.Plus

Fax.Plus App

The world is moving away from paper documents, and faxes are no exception. However, it doesn’t mean we can’t still take advantage of the convenience of sending and receiving faxes via email. With that in mind, here are some things you might want to know about faxing today.

First, many options exist for sending and receiving faxes online. One of our favorites is Fax.Plus. This free app allows you to send and receive faxes via email. You don’t need a fax machine anymore; just upload files to your phone or tablet and send them anywhere. And because it’s built into Gmail, you can easily access your faxes while composing emails. It integrates with popular cloud storage platforms such as Box, Dropbox, Google Drive, iCloud, Microsoft OneDrive, and others.

Online fax services make it possible to dispense with fax machines without fear that faxing will die out. It’s easy to use and well designed, the “Fax.Plus” app. Digital signatures and a contact manager are notable features. Users can quickly send a fax to a recipient by taking a photo of the attachment, attaching a cover sheet, and sending it via a mobile fax app. With “Fax.Plus.” the process is streamlined.

Another option is Zoho Send. This service costs $10 per month or $100 annually. It includes unlimited incoming faxes and one outgoing fax each month. Users can schedule faxes up to 10 days in advance. They can also set up recurring faxes, meaning they can automatically send them every week or month without manually adding them to the calendar.

Finally, there are plenty of companies offering standalone fax solutions. For example, OfficeMax sells fax machines for under $50. A similar product from Staples sells for around $60. In addition to being affordable, these devices offer basic features, including scanning and printing capabilities.

MSRP Per Month, Starts at $5.99 Per Month at FAX.PLUS

Nine Email

Nine Email
Nine Email

Email clients are like cars—they’re better when you buy them. And while there are plenty of free options, most people want something that works well and looks good. If you’ve been looking for a solid alternative to Gmail, Outlook, or Yahoo Mail, we think you’ll find what you’re looking for in Nine.

Nine offers a lot of great features. You can easily switch between conversations and threads, manage multiple accounts simultaneously, and even set up alerts to let you know when someone replies to your messages. But perhaps the best thing about Nine is its easy use. Its clean design makes navigating emails simple and fast. Plus, the app is completely customizable, allowing you to tweak everything from colors to fonts to notifications.

The biggest downside to Nine is that it doesn’t integrate with many popular online apps, such as Facebook, Twitter, Slack, Trello, and others. This might seem like a deal breaker, but it’s a feature. While some people prefer having access to all their information in one place, others enjoy keeping things separate. So if you don’t mind missing out on specific integrations, this could be a perfect fit.

Reading and replying to emails is intuitive, thanks to the clean interface and optional conversation view. The ability to customize notification actions, including a handy “Mark as read” option, is one of the best features. Although it’s not cheap, it’s only $14.99 for a much-improved email experience.

If you’re ready to try Nine, head to the App Store now.

TurboTax Tax Return App

TurboTax Tax Return App
TurboTax Tax Return App

Intuit’s TurboTax Tax Return App offers a streamlined experience for both beginners and ambitious filers alike. We found it easy to navigate, even though it required us to answer questions about our financial situation and filing history. For example, the app asks you how much money you make each month and whether you owe any back taxes. You can enter information manually or fill out a worksheet based on previous years.

We reviewed Intuit’s TurboTax Tax Return App this year and found it to be the best. Its best features are its excellent user interface, support for all primary tax forms, and innovative help options. Whenever you get stuck, you can ask the Virtual Assistant for help. With SmartLook, you can connect with a tax expert via video chat.

The app automatically generates a summary report that includes your income and deductions; your refund amount; and a breakdown of your taxable income, personal exemptions, standard deduction, itemized deductions, and total taxes owed. This lets you see exactly what you’ll receive back from Uncle Sam.

You can also view your return online, download it directly to your phone, and print a copy. All of these functions work well together, and the app makes it easy to keep track of changes throughout the process.

We like that the app lets you choose either the 1040EZ or 1040A form. While the latter is the most popular choice, the former gives you fewer choices for deductions. However, the 1040A form is the way to go if you want to claim student loan interest.

In addition, the app supports all primary tax forms, including Schedule A, B, D, E, F, H, I, J, K, L, M, N, O, Q, R, S, T, V, W, X, Z, and Form 8919. And while we didn’t test it extensively, the app did seem to handle multiple accounts correctly.

READING & NEWS

Calibre Companion

Calibre Companion
Calibre Companion App

Calibre Companion is one of those apps that feels like it was built specifically for people like me — I love books and reading, and I’m always looking for ways to make my life easier and better organized. So when I saw that Calibre had added support for EPUBs and PDFs, I knew I needed to try it out. And boy, did it ever deliver.

With Caliber being a giant in ebook management, this app is a great companion. Your eReader can be connected to your computer via USB or Wi-Fi in just a few clicks. Alternatively, you can also store your ebooks in the cloud to access them from anywhere. The ease of use and good functionality is surprising.

I don’t know exactly what happened, but suddenly, my Kindle could no longer read my library of paperbacks. My iPad couldn’t sync them either. But Calibre Companion could handle both formats flawlessly. It handled everything I threw at it, including DRM’d files.

The best part about Calibre Companion is that it makes managing my books incredibly simple. For example, I can easily drag and drop books onto my device without worrying about syncing them first. If I want to move a book from my desktop to my tablet, I simply copy the file to my Dropbox account, then plug my tablet into my laptop via USB cable. From there, Calibre Companion automatically detects the change and starts downloading the book.

And since Calibre Companion supports over 20 different devices, I can even transfer books from my phone to my laptop, tablet, or e-reader without hassle. Of course, I still prefer to keep things local because I can do pretty amazing things with my smartphone that aren’t possible otherwise. For instance, I can download books directly to my iPhone, then later upload them to my laptop. Or I can take advantage of Apple’s AirDrop feature to send books wirelessly to my friends’ phones.

Of course, Calibre Companion isn’t limited to just books. It can also manage audiobooks, comic books, magazines, newspapers, and anything else you throw at it. Best of all, it can work with any format, whether it’s a physical object or digital data.

In short, Calibre Companion is the ultimate tool for anyone who loves books.

Reddit is fun

reddit is fun
reddit is fun App

Reddit is one of those sites where you can find interesting news stories, funny memes, and even some great videos. But it’s also a site filled with trolls, bots, and people trying to game the system. And sometimes, the best way to deal with trolls is to ignore them.

But there are times when you want to take action against someone who is being mean to you online. In these cases, Reddit has a feature called “report.” You can use reports to flag posts that contain offensive language, spam, or anything else that breaks the rules of Reddit. If enough people do it, moderators will investigate the post and decide whether it needs to be removed.

There’s no shortage of Reddit apps on the Google Play store, and choosing one over another ultimately comes down to preference, but Reddit is fun (RIF) is a great option. The default view features a dense, text-heavy layout that puts the best (and worst) of Reddit front and center. There’s a light and dark theme and tons of layout content customization options to try out, even if you don’t opt for the paid version. Better yet, there are no ads in either version of RIF, and its overall performance is speedy.

SECURITY

Bitdefender Mobile Security

Bitdefender Mobile Security
Bitdefender Mobile Security App

Bitdefender Mobile Security is one of the best free security apps on the Play Store. It offers up to five different levels of protection, including basic malware scanning, full device encryption, and even a feature called “Smart Scan.” Smart Scan uses machine learning algorithms to look for suspicious behavior, like unusual network activity, and it can even detect whether your device is infected with ransomware. It’s pretty impressive stuff.

The app also contains antiphishing technology, which protects against malicious websites masquerading as legitimate ones. There are multiple ways to identify fraudulent sites, such as checking the URL address bar, looking for red flags, and verifying the certificate authority. If there’s anything wrong with the site, Bitdefender will warn you about it.

This app does everything we’ve come to expect from a mobile antivirus solution, plus it has some nifty extras. For example, it integrates well with Android Wear smartwatches, allowing you to scan your devices remotely while you’re out and about. You can also set up alerts for specific events, like receiving a text message containing a link or opening a file attachment.

If you want to keep your data safe, Bitdefender Mobile Security is a great choice. It’s easy to use, and it won’t break the bank.

With Bitdefender, your phone is scanned in seconds and receives the highest score from two independent research labs. It also offers excellent phishing protection, powerful anti-theft tools, and Android Wear integration.

Bitwarden

Bitwarden
Bitwarden App

There are plenty out there if you’re looking for a password manager. But what makes Bitwarden stand apart from the rest? Well, for starters, it’s completely free and open source. You don’t have to pay anything to use it. And best of all, it’s built by security experts who understand how important strong, unique passwords are.

The app is easy to set up and works across multiple devices. It even lets you generate random passwords and store them safely in one place. If you want to sync your data across platforms like Android and iOS, Bitwarden allows you to do just that.

In addition to being free, Bitwarden is also powerful. While most password managers allow you to add accounts manually, Bitwarden automatically scans your email inbox and pulls in logins from popular sites such as Facebook, GitHub, Dropbox, Twitter, LinkedIn, Amazon, PayPal, and many others.

You can also easily export your information into CSV files, which are great for importing into other apps. Plus, Bitwarden offers 2FA support and includes a feature called “secure password sharing,” which helps you keep your login credentials safe while letting someone else access them.

Bitwarden is available for Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and iOS. So whether you’re on a desktop, laptop, tablet, or smartphone, Bitwarden can work with you wherever life takes you.

Password managers like Bitwarden support two-factor authentication and secure password sharing. It also has a password generator and allows importing passwords from other services. Besides, it’s free and open source, which means you can use it on any computer or mobile device.

Mobile devices’ popularity has spawned many security options, including one-time password generators and authenticator apps. There are many benefits to using an app over a traditional method, such as having access to your account, even offline. However, there are some drawbacks associated with apps, too. For example, most require you to install and configure the app before logging into a service. Some apps don’t support multiple sign-in methods, while others limit what type of information you can store locally.

But there are plenty of reasons why you should consider adding an app to your arsenal. Here are five tips to help you choose the best app for your needs.

Microsoft Authenticator allows you to log in to your services with a numeric or QR code. Apart from its simplicity, the app also offers cloud backup and an app lock option. Authentication can be done by entering the service’s two-digit number or clicking Allow in the pop-up window.

ProtonMail

ProtonMail
ProtonMail App

Your Gmail inbox is insecure because anyone with access to your account could read your emails without you knowing. Even worse, hackers could use your login credentials to take over your entire account. To fix this problem, you need to switch to a different email provider, where security is taken seriously. Fortunately, there are plenty of alternatives to Gmail, including ProtonMail.

The most obvious difference between ProtonMail and other mail providers is that it uses end-to-end encryption. Instead of storing your data on Google servers, ProtonMail stores everything locally on your device. And since your messages are stored locally, it’s impossible for third parties to intercept them. In addition, ProtonMail doesn’t keep copies of your emails anywhere else. So even if someone hacks into your ProtonMail account, they won’t find anything useful.

In addition to a free tier, ProtonMail offers several pricing options. ProtonMail works like any other email client, except for its security and privacy features. You can secure your network traffic with ProtonVPN, one of the best free VPNs on the editorial board.

Another thing that makes ProtonMail unique is how easy it is to set up. Unlike many online services, ProtonMail does not require you to download software or sign up for a paid plan. You simply go to the site and enter your username and password. After that, you’ll be ready to start sending and receiving messages immediately.

In terms of price, ProtonMail offers three tiers of plans. For $5 per month, you receive unlimited storage space for incoming and outgoing emails. You can send and receive unlimited emails if you’re willing to pay $10 per month. Finally, if you want to store millions of messages, you can upgrade to the $150 monthly plan. All plans include a 30-day money-back guarantee.

If you decide to try out ProtonMail, don’t forget to use our referral code to get 10 GB of extra storage space for yourself.

Best Shopping Apps for Android

Amazon

Amazon
Amazon App

Amazon launched its shopping app in May of 2017. Do you know what else launched around the same time? A lot of people’s hatred towards Amazon. But we’ve realized that the app isn’t meant to compete against traditional retail stores. Instead, it’s designed to help you shop online faster and easier. And since it’s built into the operating system, it’ll always be here whenever you want to use it.

The app itself is pretty straightforward. A navigation bar across the bottom shows different categories like Electronics, Clothing, Books & Music, Home & Kitchen, Toys & Games, etc. Each category contains subcategories, which allow you to browse by type of product or brand. If you’re looking for something specific, you can filter the results by price range, rating, popularity, or customer reviews.

You can add items to your cart directly from the app, or you can choose to view products on Amazon’s website. Either way, once you decide whether or not you want to purchase something, you simply tap “Buy Now,” and you’re taken to the checkout process. Once everything’s squared away, you pay via your Amazon account and receive shipping information from Amazon.com.

Once you’re done shopping, you can check your purchases in the app or sync them to your Amazon mobile device. You can access your wish list, review your history, or find recommendations based on what you already bought.

You can buy almost anything on Amazon, the Internet’s marketplace. Alexa voice control and photo search are two of our favorite features on Android. Amazon’s consumer services are available, including Fresh and Restaurants, but the video has been spun off into its app.

Google Pay

Google Pay
Google Pay App

Google Pay has gone through many iterations since its launch in 2013. Originally called Google Wallet, the app lets people pay each other via Google accounts and mobile phones. But the company eventually rebranded the app to Google Pay because it wanted to appeal to a broader audience. “We’re trying to make sure we cover every type of consumer,” a former Google executive told Business Insider.

Google Pay, formerly known as Google Wallet, lets you send money quickly without worrying about cash or credit cards. Compared to Venmo, another Google service, it’s a solid alternative.

The app now allows consumers to transfer funds to one another either directly or through third-party apps like PayPal and Venmo. Users can also use it to buy goods online and offline — even if they don’t have a Google account.

And while there are plenty of competitors, including Apple Pay and Samsung Pay, Google Pay still holds up well against its rivals. It works across most major retailers and banks, whereas Apple Pay and Samsung Pay require specific partnerships with certain companies. Plus, Google Pay doesn’t rely on NFC technology, meaning it won’t work inside stores unless those locations have been updated to support payments.

You can even see how conditions have changed since you checked earlier today.

You can also use the app’s widget to check local temperatures and precipitation without opening up the full application. There are also several new options for displaying data, such as showing temperature trends over the day. And there’s now a “Today” section that displays the forecast for the next few days.

There are still a couple of things missing, though. For example, you don’t get access to radar images, nor do you get notifications about severe weather alerts. But overall, we think Weather Underground is one of the better weather apps.

Android users should download Weather Underground. With an elegant design and useful weather information, it offers a great user experience. Instead, it looks at sentences and highlights grammatical mistakes, offering suggestions for fixing those problems. If you see something wrong, just tap the button to let Grammarly know what needs fixing.

Once you start typing, you’ll notice that Grammarly automatically suggests words based on context. For example, if you’re trying to say “I’m sorry,” Grammarly knows that you probably don’t want to say “im.” So, it will suggest “am” instead. You can choose to ignore these suggestions, too.

If you’d prefer to work with cards rather than buttons, Grammarly also provides a full-screen view where you can make edits directly within the text box. Cards show examples of common mistakes along with helpful tips on how to avoid making those same mistakes again.

You can even save your favorite cards, so you don’t have to retype the same thing over and over again. And since Grammarly doesn’t store anything on your device, there are no ads or data collection to worry about.

Many options include themes, fonts, colors, icons, and more. If you’re looking for something simple, there’s also a handy “Quick Start” feature where you can set up shortcuts to common tasks such as opening your favorite browser or launching your favorite music player. And if you want to add some extra functionality, you can install third-party launchers for things like task killers, antivirus software, and more. All in all, Microsoft Launcher is one of the best replacements for your existing launcher.

Microsoft Launcher can replace your Android phone’s default launcher, providing quick access to recent apps, events, and frequently contacted contacts. You can display the main app list horizontally or vertically, with a sleek alphabetical scroll bar for quick access to apps. It works as smoothly as the default launcher and does not interfere with Google Assistant.
